Who We Are

The American Fire Service is often referred to as a “brotherhood”.  We believe this unbreakable bond can only be forged through a shared suffering, daily drilling, and subscribing to an ethos that “Hard Work Fixes Everything”. Therefore our bond is earned alongside one another, where nothing of value comes without effort, and failure is critical to our success.  In essence, our “brotherhood” is forged in training. We are a Brotherhood in Training.
  • Eric & Frank have designed training programs for active and aspiring Firefighters, LEO, Military, and Fire Recruit Academies

Are you ready to become a firefighter?

The Health of the American Fire Service
The health and wellness of the American Fire Service is under siege.  A lack of fitness, poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, and exposures to deadly carcinogens are leaving our firefighters at a much greater risk of injury and death than many other occupations.  Our goal is to provide firefighters with the necessary skill sets, programming, and knowledge to increase their fireground performance whether they are new to the fire service or a seasoned vet.
Physiology of Firefighting
Studies show heart rates of firefighters during interior structural firefighting operations between 164-183 beats per minute.
Oxygen consumption may reach 85-95% of maximum (VO2max) for brief periods. Based on studies by Barbara Ainsworth of the U of South Carolina, firefighters can expend energy at a level of 12 METs while conducting firefighter operations.  This is the same level of energy expenditure seen in Navy SEALs and Professional Boxers.
Separate Yourself From The Rest
The Fire Academy Recruit Program is the premier program available to assist the aspiring firefighter prepare for a career in the fire service.  Before somebody can even be considered and receive a job offer for the fire department, most will have to pass a rigorous physical agility test that will disqualify many good candidates.  The goal of this program is to not only make you thrive on Qualification Day but also teach you the necessary skills to keep you safe, reduce your risk of injury, and build a work capacity that will be essential for getting the job done when the time comes on the fireground.  This program will include different components that will focus on building your aerobic capacity, muscular strength & endurance, and metabolic conditioning.

Our Training Methodology

skills sessions

Proper body mechanics are essential in avoiding injury and being able to operate effectively on the fireground.  We use specific skill sessions to develop these movement patterns and build stamina in them so that during operations they will hold up in most austere environments and under extreme physical stress.

Metabolic Conditioning

Showing up prepared for the job means that firefighters must be ready to meet the demands of the fireground. Studies show that firefighters can experience extremely high heart rates and consume oxygen at rates near their physiologic ceiling during fireground operations. For these reasons our program will focus on developing all the metabolic pathways and address any weaknesses that may be apparent.

Calisthenics

Body weight exercises are a vital part of our program.  Not only are they unique in their ability to develop muscular endurance but they also allow us to work on our conditioning without the need of equipment.  Fire Academies around the country utilize calisthenics as a part of their daily PT regimen and our program will prepare you to dominate your next evolution.

Endurance

Cardiovascular Respiratory Endurance is essential for high performance on the fireground.  Whether you have been operating on scene for hours or need to score high on a 1.5 mile run test during the hiring process, your endurance will pay dividends when it comes time to perform.  Our program is designed to increase your aerobic capacity with specialized workouts and personalized pacing unlike traditional endurance training that can lead to overuse injuries and diminished results.

Why There's Nothing Quite Like Brotherhood In Training?

Passion + Experience + Technology = High Performance Firefighters
In the last six years, I have trained with Eric Haskins and Frank Beauvais dozens (if not hundreds) of times, both in the gym and on the training grounds. Eric and Frank possess an unparalleled combination of passion, education, and experience in both firefighting and fitness. This alone makes them notable, but what sets Brotherhood in Training apart is their complete lack of ego. Their entire focus is on building healthy, high-performance firefighters. Simply put: There is nobody I would trust more highly with training and programming than Brotherhood in Training.
